Brazilian Jiu Jitsu Fundamentals Program of Science of Jiu Jitsu Team developed by professor Mario Rodríguez

Summary

In the class we work on the main concepts of the closed guard in brazilian jiu jitsu.

We talk about the advantages (better control of the opponent and transitional advantages) and disadvantages (relative mobility constraint )

We work on understanding the goals we have when playing closed guard:

  • Sweep
  • Submit
  • Transition to other positions (Mount, Back)

We also work on Foundational concepts and strategies like:

Breaking the opponents posture for achieving to put his head down and make him post the hands to the mat (Using knee pulls and side unbalancing).

We should understand that these movements allow us to create openings for submissions and sweeps.

Four main positions and movements :

  • Cross an arm to take the back
  • Getting cross collar grip
  • Over hook
  • Bump sweep drill

Foundational movements :

  • Side angle generation Drill
  • Knee Pulls Drill

We see some of the most used sweeps and submissions from the closed guard

  • Sweeps : Flower Sweep, Scissor Sweep, Bump Sweep, Double Ankle Sweep, Mermaid Sweep, Tripod Sweep
  • Submissions: Arm lock, Triangle, Cross choke
