Class Five: Opening the Closed Guard.

Class Five: Opening the Closed Guard.

Brazilian Jiu Jitsu Fundamentals Program of Science of Jiu Jitsu Team developed by professor Mario Rodríguez

Summary

In this class we work on the principles and strategies for opening the closed guard in brazilian jiu jitsu.

It is explained why the best way to do it is going standing, although there are ways to open the closed guard being on our knees.

We work on the following main concepts:

Don't attack, stand checking the base, correct posture (head up, hands not on the floor, active toes).

Then we work  on opening the closed guard standing up

Two main grips :

  • One hand con grabs one sleeve and the other both lapels at the opponent's chest.
  • Two lapel control under opponents armpits.
  • Differences for standing on each variation.
  • Shaking and compass movement for opening.
  • Understanding the passing mechanics. (to knee cut and to back step)

Then we work on an opening from the knees. (The compass technique)

We emphasize that the goal after opening the closed guard is to continue the pass and progress to better positions like side control, knee on the belly or the mount, north south or even the back if the opponent turn away.
